you gotta have heart
Microphones are fading in and out, Cole Porter lyrics are bring sung in an unrecognizable key, and tweens are speaking lines laced with sexual innuendo that they (hopefully) don’t understand. It is unmistakably a school play. I love the theatre, which might be part of the issue. After spending six months criticizing professional theatre, it’s hard to turn off my internal critic.
I attend the annual musical performed by my former middle school for two reasons. One: I feel it is important to support a place that was so much a part of me. Two: I know what it is like. It isn’t easy getting up on a stage and ne watched. It is vital that these kids think that they are doing well. As they stand there glaring at the audience and smiling as they perform, the viewer can look past the performance and see a feeling of accomplishment that every person deserves.
So the next time you have the opportunity to see a school play, grit your teeth and sacrifice your ear for music. Those kids work there asses off and ought to have a sell-out crowd.
